Shocking

Whether your boat is docked, anchored, or on a mooring, wave action can sometimes beat the bejeebers out of it; that's what Shockles are intended to prevent. Clipped onto the rode or lines they relieve your boat and its accessories of the stress caused by waves. Other applications are abundant; for example, they're ideal for towing an inflatable, and if a dyed-in-the-Dacron sailor attaches one to each gunwale, the opposing tension will center the tiller while the skipper tends to other duites. Covered with a tough nylon sheath (available in red, blue and black) that prevents chafing, the Shockle is made of a special elastomer that will stretch to twice its length and contracts to original dimensions. It has a tested strength of 1,200 pounds and both ends have marine aluminum carabiners on them so the Shockle can be easily attached and detached even under load. Shockles can be purchased online from the manufacturer; 12-inch $41.95; 18-inch $44.95; 24-inch $49.95, P.O. Box 856, Hood River, OR 97031; 888-557-6464; www.shockles.com.
